2

A place to come home to.

3Where

Nyhavn, Copenhagen

The old harbour, with its painted houses and wooden boats. The first Havn Kaffe opened here, in a former boathouse.

5Why this name

Short enough to shout across the water.

Fishermen said havn and meant home. We kept the word plain enough to print on a cup.

7The ideas

Six ideas, one cup.

We drew the harbour six ways. Anchors and boats said sea, not coffee. The cup with steam kept the quay in the picture.

Anchor. Too nautical for a cafe.
Boat. Too literal.
Lighthouse. A harbour, not a cafe.
Bean. Every roaster has one.
Mug and wave. Too busy at small size.
Cup and steam. The quay stays in the picture.
9The build

Built on one stroke.

  1. One thicknessThe bowl, the handle and the steam share a single stroke.
  2. Two circlesBoth have radius 20, shifted by two units, which softens the base.
  3. Three wispsThey lean like swells, at 34, 45 and 56 along the rim.

Step one

A cup with three wisps of steam.

One line draws the cup, and the same line rises as steam.

Step two

The cup steps aside.

What is left is only the steam: three soft lines.

Step three

Steam lies down and becomes the harbour.

Three swells on the water. The name and the symbol say the same thing.

13The type

A word with the cup inside.

Inter SemiBold, pulled in by four percent so the letters read as one word. Its round forms echo the cup.

Keep one cup-width clear on every side. Below 80 pixels use the mark alone. At 16 pixels it still reads as a cup.

One line, held in a hand

One stroke draws the cup, so it prints cleanly on paper. On the quay the sleeve is the first thing people see.

Roasted by the water

The beans are roasted a few steps from the quay. The first cups go to the fishermen and to whoever walks past.

The wall behind the counter

The same blue climbs the tiles behind the machine. Regulars learn the room by that one colour.

31In use

Small things, same mark

A tote, a beanie, a mug and a stack of cards. On the beanie the mark shrinks to one stitched cup.

33The app

Order from the quay.

Pick a drink, set it up, watch the timer, collect the stamp.
